Welcome to project “Liberty Cap

We hope we will be able to honor your curiosity. What we do is simple. We re-invent a +200 years old piece of fashion, the Liberty Cap, in order to make a political statement about the importance of freedom of speech for a free democratic society – nothing more, nothing less.

Firstly, we hope you agree that our mission is important.

Secondly, we hope that you will support our quest for freedom of speech, “Kickstart” the production of the Liberty Cap and thereby support the freedom fighting organizations that benefit from the surplus generated.
Its 50 % capitalism and 50 % idealism – we call it “CAPIDEALISM”
What we will do is simple. We will simply donate half the annual profit and distribute it evenly among the organizations and purposes chosen. The chosen ones are Wikipedia, PEN-International, Committee to protect Journalist, Icorn and Individual victims of terrorist acts against the freedom of speech (by application).

Thirdly, we hope that you will also wear the Liberty Cap (at least when it’s cold outside) and thereby promote and become an ambassador for our global fight for freedom of speech.

If you are in a playful mode, do not hesitate to visit our facebook-page and post your photo´s, videos and comments. Photo´s of you and your “Liberty Cap” are warmly welcomed. We might even use the best of your photo´s for our marketing-efforts, so it might be your short-cut to a career in modelling or fashion photography?

The Liberty Cap product

Our Featured Works and Case Studies so far

How does the modern interpretation of the Liberty Cap look like?

As you can see, we have already made the first design in red knitted wool. It is however our intention to produce Liberty Caps in natural wool as well as colors such as grey and black. We want the Liberty Cap to be affordable to everybody, and then hopefully shear voulme will generate a surplus for donations. Consequently, we have decided on what we consider a fair price.

The price will be 200 DKK, or approximately 30 $ or 27 € depending on the exchange rate.

So far it is a “one size fits all”, but the current version fits children from age 5 to adults with small and medium sized heads.

The customized Liberty Cap logo shown below pictures a mouth about to be unzipped and the statement “Freedom of speech – a revolution in fashion”.

The Liberty Cap is produced in Denmark by the Company, Topsi Strik, Park Allé 7, 7430 Ikast.

The Liberty Cap symbol

Send a sign with a symbol of freedom

In late Republican Rome, a soft felt cap called the pileus served as a symbol of freemen (i.e. non-slaves), and was symbolically given to slaves upon manumission, thereby granting them not only their personal liberty, but also libertas— freedom as citizens, with the right to vote (if male). Through a confusion between the pileus and the Phrygian Cap, the latter came to signify freedom and the pursuit of liberty in early modern Europe, and consequently, the Phrygian cap is sometimes called a liberty cap; in artistic representations it signifies freedom and the pursuit of liberty.

In the years just prior to the American Revolutionary War of independence from Great Britain, the symbol of republicanism and anti-monarchial sentiment reappeared in the United States as headgear of Columbia, who in turn was visualized as a goddess-like female 250-ImmColum_1787_Eagle_onational personification of the United States and of Liberty herself. The cap reappears in association with Columbia in the early years of the republic, for example on the obverse of the 1785 Immune Columbia pattern coin, which shows the goddess with a helmet seated on a globe holding in a right hand a furled American flag topped by the liberty cap. Today you will see the Liberty cap on for instance the Seal of the U.S. Senate, but the Liberty cap also appears in several  Latin American countries´ coat of arms, including that of Cuba, Haiti, Argentina, Bolivia etc.

In Europe the Liberty cap is often associated with revolutionary France, where the use of a Phrygian-style cap as a symbol of revolutionary France first appeared in May 1790, at a festival in Troyes adorning a statue representing the nation, and at Lyon, on a lance carried by the goddess Libertas. To this day the national allegory of France, Marianne, is shown wearing a red Phrygian cap – The Liberty cap.

This is the historic reason why we label this “CAPidealistic” product “a revolution in fashion”. The other reason is that we want to fund and support a new 21th century revolutionary fight for freedom of speech – because it´s still needed!!
